Where is our attention focused?

Thinking statueWhen all the hubbub of life fades to the background where do our thoughts go? Maybe for us, this is when we’re driving. Or maybe, it’s what we’re thinking about when we first wake up or go do sleep. Where is our attention focused?

Where our thoughts go in these in-between spaces tells a lot about ourself. These thoughts form the basic theme of our life, in the season we’re in, right now.

For some of us, these thoughts are about how to get ahead in life. For some, these thoughts are about how bad their situation seems. Maybe for others, these thoughts are about how they can create the next happy moment for themselves.

It would be good to examine what these thoughts are because they can be a powerful force in our experience of life itself. If we’re focused on getting ahead in life, we’ll tend to be forever focused on how there’s never enough. If we’re focused on how bad our situation seems, we’ll be thinking about how much life sucks for us. Or if we’re focused on how to create the next happy moment for us, we’ll be stuck in some form of addiction.

For a long time, I was always thinking about getting ahead in life, and I felt like there was never enough. In some ways, I’m still working my way out of this. I’m learning to be freer with my money and not hang on to it so tightly.

Instead I suggest refocusing our thoughts on other things such as:

  • how much we are loved, especially by God
  • how grateful we are for what we have
  • how we can express love for and impact others

When we refocus our thoughts off of the negative and onto the positive, we are much freer to pursue our dreams and live our calling.
