What Holds Us Back – Part 2

ball_chainLast time I talked about the number one belief that holds us back. You can read about it here. Once we adjust our world view and believe what we want is possible, there’s another thing we bump into that holds us back.

This barrier manifests in our life just about everyday. It shows up when worry about what other people might think. It shows up when we stay in a job we hate. It shows up when we tremble at the thought of speaking in public. It shows up when talk about our dreams but never act on them. It’s not the Matrix. It’s our instinctual and absolute need for safety and fear of uncertainty.

We all have this instinct to be safe, and it is often cranked up to eleven. Here are some ways we can recognize this need for safety rearing it’s head:

Strained Relationships

Our need to be safe cause just about everyone to have this protective shell around us. We act in certain ways so that we won’t be rejected or hurt.

Often times this need to be safe translates into a need to win at all costs. If we’re losing then we’re vulnerable and unsafe. So to be safe, we must win. We work to win every argument, inject our opinion into every topic, and disapprove of anything we didn’t come up with.

We go around acting as a poser, winning at all costs, and wanting people to like and trust us. Hm, how’s this working for us? It’s certainly not been working for me.

Dreams Never Started

Our need to be absolutely safe often prevents us from even taking the first step in pursuing our dreams. When we pursue our dreams it brings up all kinds of internal “stuff.” What if I’m not up to it? What if I’m just a fool pursuing unicorns and rainbows? What if I make a target of myself? So, we spend lots of time thinking about our dreams, but never take that first step.

Stopped Project

Our need to be safe is instinctual and often at a subconscious level. If we find our project has stopped, it’s likely that we are subconsciously pushing pause on it. Possibly, at some level we are afraid of some outcome – real or imagined.

Abandoned Goals

At it’s most fundamental level, if we don’t achieve goals that are achievable, some part of us didn’t really want that goal. Likely this is our need for safety on steroids showing up again.

As Lance Wallnau recently stated, everything we really want in life is on the other side of fear.

What about you? What are your dreams and goals in life? How can we support you?
